Welcome to The Bee Hive Hub

Hi. My name is Dawn. I am a Christian with ADHD and I have 3 children that I home-educate.  At least one of my children we believe is definitely on the spectrum, but getting diagnosed is a minefield in itself.

I grew up in the school system but the freedom that I experienced at first began to subtly shift. When I had my own children I began to feel that I was losing my parental rights. All three of my children went to Nursery school but it became apparent that this was not going to be a good fit for us.

My journey felt endless to begin with. I had a lack of knowledge and information when working out what I assumed home-education was.

As I have grown with my children I have come to understand what works best for our family and how my children learn best. I have tried and tested many websites, read books and listened to my children's needs. I now help run a home-education group which has had lots of positive feedback and is building in popularity within the community.

This website is being built upon what I feel is needed for others that home-educate. The aim is to help bring the love of learning to home-educating family's around the UK by providing resources and inspiring new ideas for both young and old.

If you are a home-educator I would love your input so that together we can aim to build a brighter future for the next generations.

The L.A's Involvement
in our children's Learning

In all honesty I find the L.A to be a tricky subject to talk about as every area has different rules and different people that may be nice or a little tricky to work around. They have always told me they are here to help but never seem to have much information to help me with. I think its important to talk about them but will try to stay as neutral as i can on the topic because everyone's experiences with them are different.

From what I am aware (I may not be 100% correct). The L.A (Local Authority) are required to keep track of all home educated children and are required to monitor if children are receiving a suitable education. This may be through direct meetings or through post/email.
When I began home educating my daughter I didn't have a clue about the legality's and reports. I was contacted by the L.A and had a meeting not knowing I didn't have to. Luckily I had a lovely lady come to see me and she asked me about our plans and what activities we did. she was happy with what we had on display and went on her way. In hind sight I had no idea who this person was and what credentials she had. I have always been anxious with new people and didn't like the idea of having to let her into my home every year so began research. Lots of people suggested only communicating through email which was a huge relief. Over the years I have come across multiple L.A's and they often try to push the boundary's asking for more than they are legally required to have. I would suggest that if you are not aware of the legal side of home educating that it would be good to learn the basics so that if you are ever struggling with an L.A you know what your rights are and how to tell them to step back. You can give them as much or as little information as you like as long as you keep to what is required. I suggest sharing the bare minimum so that it is easier to compile information and also so that they don't overstep on other home educators thinking they have the right to more than we legally need to provide. Our children's safety and privacy is important.

The dreaded yearly report for my L.A was due this month and as soon as that email pings I panic. I have no reason to worry but suddenly this unknown person is looming over me, that I have to answer to and justify that my teaching methods are working. Proving that my children are developing and progressing. The word they always use is Suitable, "we need to let you know if your education is suitable for your children." Throughout my Home Education Journey I have become aware that a suitable education for me and my family just means that they are developing within their reading, writing and Math skills. Of course they develop in so many more areas of learning and life but these 3 are the most important to the L.A. This year I gave them a little more than they needed. I wrote 1 A4 page word document before placing it within an email, I detailed what apps we used and the level they progressed from last year. (I have learned to document what I told them the year before for this reason.) I then talked about our extra curriculum activities to show they have a social life. Providing an idea of what we will do in the next year can also keep them at bay but i often just end the letters with, I will continue to teach using these methods. One of my sons has struggled and regressed slightly so I suggested that if he doesn't progress this year that I will look for alternative methods. I don't divulge in anything that we may want to do as i know from experience that I may have every intention of doing something but life often happens stopping me from executing the plan. DON'T GIVE THE L.A ANYTHING THEY CAN PULL YOU UP ON NEXT YEAR.

So unfortunately whether we like it or not we do have to comply with the L.A to be able to Home Educate. There may be a few of us that have been able to hide under the radar but I'm aware the laws in England can change at any time so keep track of the law and make sure you know where you stand.

Lets Stop Sitting At Desks

Many Home Educating Parents May have grown up within the school system. It has been ingrained within us that learning is sitting at a desk, taking in the information that is spoken to us. In some ways this may be the best method of learning but i want to talk to you today about the joys of learning in a more physical, energetic, outside of the school system way.

Learning opportunities come in many shapes and forms, It can not be pinned down to specific subjects. Baking for example has multiple subjects involved; English for reading instructions, Math for measuring ingredients and Science for the chemical reactions. When my daughter was younger she did not like reading but she loved baking. I created easy to read recipes with pictures to encourage her. I got her to look for recipes on YouTube and write them down to encourage writing. We experimented by guessing the ingredients and seeing what happened before using the correct recipes. It was an adventure.

We had many different adventures with our learning. When we went outside we collected leaves, grass and flowers to make garden art pictures. We played eye spy when traveling and counted cars and buses. Some of the most important questions were asked while we walked around which helped us to include many subjects along the way, such as; PSHE, Math, History and Religious Studies. When we go on holidays even now that she is older we pull out maps and show our children where we are now, where we have been and where we are going. This is a great way to bring geography into their learning in a way they will remember. History is taken in better when we visit museums, old houses and castles. My son was motivated to read more because he loves computer games and wanted to read the story that was only portrayed in text.

It can feel like a huge trial at times but slowing down and taking time to talk about what learning opportunities can come from day to day life and activities can actually be invaluable lessons for life. Learning about money with actual money in the shops is going to make more sense than a lot of writing and numbers on paper. Of course i can only speak for the way my family have been learning, but i encourage you to be more open to the daily opportunities of learning that you may usually overlook.

Creating a Group

During our family's HE (home-education) journey i felt a need for a group that we could not seem to find. I wanted an easy going group with plenty to do but no pressure to join in. Most groups we found either had a specific skill set, a specific age range or just didn't provide anything other than a hall.
I embarked on a a journey to create this. I helped 2 groups set up and build but they did not survive for different reasons, It didn't seem to be the right fit.
It is now 7 years after my initial decision to start a group and i have finally created it. I found a church that helped ignite my Idea's and they are helping to support our objective to bring HE family's together in a safe interactive way.
I personally have been extremely lucky as the legal side of running a children's group has been placed under the umbrella of the church. If you are wishing to open your own group legality's such as Insurance, health and safety, first aid and CBS checks are worth looking into.
Once the legal bits have been sorted then the fun will begin.
Planning sessions takes time we pick themes for each week and have a basic activity plan. A sensory activity,  craft activity and worksheets that fit the theme. Children are not required to complete the worksheet but will be rewarded with sweets if they try. We supply toddler toys, board games, Lego's, fidget's, drinks and snacks. I personally am not great at the social aspect of running a group but this is why a team of people can be important. Two of our team members take turns running group games if children want to join in, such as parachute games, red light green light, what emotion am i? and other playground games that HE children may miss out on if they have not attended school. We are currently searching for a school style photographer and planning yearly party's and trips out together. Our base design of the group derives from toddler groups but aims to let children be themselves and make friends without any pressures.
I have included pictures from our pirate themed week for your inspiration.
We have a parents must stay policy which makes it much easier on the volunteers helping and parents can then also get to know each other creating a wonderful community of people.
I am planning on running this group as long as is personally possible for me and hope that this will inspire you to find or start your own group.
